Officers, Leadership, & Seniority

At camp, we had some confusion on officers and leadership. I've talked to many of you on how I feel about seniority and leaders on the team. In pondering a real "clear-cut" description, my opinion and expectation on things has slightly changed. I want EVERYONE to study the chart below so that we all know what our role is:

Captain: Veronica

Drill Mistress: Janica / Co-Captain: Katie

Secretary: Jessica

Historian: Emily

Jr. Rep: Sarah/ Soph. Rep: Maddie/ Fresh. Rep: Kylie

Team: All members

As you can see, this is the "ranking order" of our officers of our team. You will find in society, there is a rank to just about everything; this is how things get done effectively. Representatives- although you are different levels of seniority, you are all ranked equally. This is because your job is to deal with your class; not the entire team. Secretary is ranked higher than Historian because there are more duties required to be the Secretary.

Girls, please remember that we have officers for a reason. Without them, we would have NO TEAM. I have witnessed a team that had no leadership, no officers, and the outcome was disastrous. You need to respect your officers and listen to them when they have comments or critiques. They are not here to boss you around and be mean, but to help you grow by giving you effective criticism and being good examples. If any of you ever feel that you are being "bossed" let your coaches know so we can fix the problem. REMEMBER; please don't take offense with your officers. They are here to help our team and each girl individually. (They have paid their dues too.... they weren't always officers.)

Seniority. Just like leadership, Seniority is almost everywhere in life. Within our team, their will be times that seniority "rules." Our older members have generally had more experience with "drill life." So, older members can help lead the team by experience. However, I will not tolerate older members being mean or disrespectful in any way to a younger member. We do not discriminate or harass.

In leadership positions, seniority will help, but will not determine ranks. If a Junior is chosen as Captain and a Senior is chosen as Co-Captain, Captain still has higher rank. If this ever happens, you need to respect their talents and realize that seniority doesn't matter; talent and skill level do.

Formations. When it comes to formations seniority or officer rank DOES NOT matter. Talent level and work ethic will determine your spot in formations. I do not care how long each of you have been on the team; I will do what looks best for our team and our dance piece.

I hope this clears things up. I wanted to publish this post on here so that you can refer to it at any time so the lines are always clear. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Stay positive, respect yourself, your officers and your fellow team members. (Believe it or not we actually get judged on this.... they judge on how "unified and spirited" our team feels on the floor.) So lets be the most UNIFIED team out there! Love you all.
